Trans Axles

My experiences have been with Things that have had some late model Bug trans axles in them, as well as type 2 bus. The bus trans axles were strong, but geared so low they are great for slow hill climbing, at the expense of sometimes running hot, and had a lower top end.

The bug trans axles were slow at low speed, but were better than the bus set up by far. I have tried the 3:88 called the freeway flyer, but went back to the stock 4:12 single side cover. I decided to stick with the stock trans.

As a matter of course, I install new seals behind the flanges, as well as the outside center of the flanges and on the input shaft – cheap insurance.
